He found that there was no essential difference in the incidence of foci of infection in the two groups and drew the conclusion, therefore, that foci of infection did not constitute a sufficient factor in the pathogenesis of arthritis and that another factor was necessarily involved, such as a constitutional hereditary predisposition to arthritis or a state of allergy to the bacteria in the foci. This conclusion appears valid and logical enough until one considers his so-called
